  • People buying a boat on finance who need to provide cover to the lender
  • Owners of Turkish or foreign-flagged boats moored in Türkiye

What is Pleasure Boat and Yacht Insurance and what does it do?

A yacht or pleasure boat is often more than just a vessel; it's where you spend the best days of the year. Which is exactly why you'd rather not think about what could happen to it.

Pleasure Boat and Yacht Insurance protects your boat against risks such as perils of the sea, fire, collision, theft, earthquake, explosion and malicious acts. Cover continues not only at sea but also at its mooring, in the boatyard, while being hauled out and during maintenance at the shipyard.

You can opt for restricted cover that only protects against total loss, or we can build broader protection that also covers your liability to others, machinery damage and personal belongings. Sail or motor, we'll work out together the right set-up for your boat's age and how you use it.

What's covered

What does the policy cover?

Depending on the package you choose, some or all of the cover below can be added to your policy.

01

Total Loss (Restricted Cover)

The basic cover that applies if the boat is an actual or constructive total loss (destroyed outright, or damaged so badly that repair isn't worthwhile). Salvage, assistance and legal costs can be added for an extra premium.

02

Broad Cover (Institute Yacht Clauses)

Covers a wide range of risks, from the perils of seas, rivers, lakes and other navigable waters to fire, piracy and natural disasters.

03

Collision and Contact

Protects against damage to the boat caused by contact with quays, port equipment, land vehicles or aircraft.

04

Fire and Explosion

Covers damage caused by a fire on board or by an explosion.

05

Earthquake, Lightning and Volcanic Eruption

Damage that these natural events may cause to your boat is covered.

06

Theft

Theft of the whole boat or its tenders is covered, provided they were secured with anti-theft devices.

07

Machinery Damage and Latent Defects

Damage from boiler explosions, broken shafts and latent (hidden) defects is covered under the policy terms. Machinery cover is usually available for boats under ten years old.

08

Third-Party Liability

Covers your legal liability for injury to people or damage to property caused by your boat.

09

Malicious Acts

Losses from malicious acts, including barratry (wrongful acts by the skipper or crew against the owner), are covered.

10

Hull Inspection After Grounding

After the boat runs aground, reasonable costs of inspecting and surveying the hull are covered.

11

Personal Belongings and Electronics

On boats with a lockable cabin, personal belongings and the electronic equipment on board can be protected with extra cover.

12

Yacht Assistance

Includes services such as a replacement engine or boat, delivery of spare parts, a replacement skipper, accommodation, an online interpreter, a marina guide and returning the boat home.

Cover, exclusions and limits vary with the package you choose and the policy's general and special terms. To work out the right set of cover for you, call us on 0850 303 28 66.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Pleasure Boat and Yacht Insurance

If your question isn't on the list, give us a call. We'll keep explaining until it all makes sense.

There's no legal requirement. Only if the boat is bought on finance may the lender ask for a policy, and marinas may ask for liability cover.

It's usually arranged for one year, and cover applies within the cruising area stated in the policy.

Yes. As long as you tell us where the boat will be laid up in advance and get approval, cover continues while it's on land.

It's the share of each claim that the policyholder pays themselves. In practice it's usually set as a percentage of the sum insured, and it's clearly stated in the policy.

If the sum insured in the policy is lower than the boat's real value, claim payments are reduced in the same proportion. That's why it's important to insure the boat at its current market value.

Chartering is a change of use that must be declared and approved in advance. For commercially registered boats, chartering with a skipper is usually a requirement.

It's a special clause for boats capable of more than 17 knots, and it places limits on some covers. It's important to tell us your boat's speed from the start.

For Turkish-flagged boats, you'll need the mooring registry licence and up-to-date photos of the interior and exterior; commercially registered boats also need a seaworthiness certificate. For foreign-registered boats, you'll need the certificate of registry and either a marina contract or a residence document.
