Boat Insurance

We protect your commercial vessel, from hull to engine, whether it's waiting in port or sailing the open sea.

Who is it for?

  • Owners of boats and ships carrying commercial cargo and passengers
  • Operators of commercial fishing boats longer than 2.5 metres
  • Shipyard, marina, boatyard and port operators
  • Businesses providing ship repair and maintenance services
  • Organisations that finance vessels and mortgagee creditors

What is Boat Insurance and what does it do?

For people who make their living at sea, a boat is both a vessel and their capital. A collision, a grounding or a small fire in the engine room doesn't just mean repair costs; it means a business at a standstill.

Boat Insurance protects vessels used for commercial purposes in navigable waters against risks such as sinking, grounding, collision, fire, earthquake and lightning. Cover isn't limited to when the boat is under way; it continues in port, at anchor and during maintenance and repairs.

From fishing boats to cargo ships, from vessels under construction to marina operations, every activity connected with the sea has its own risks. So we design the policy around the vessel's age, how it's used and its navigation area, adding loss of hire and liability cover where needed.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Boat Insurance

If your question isn't on the list, give us a call. We'll keep explaining until it all makes sense.

Hull cover isn't a legal requirement. However, lenders ask for a policy when a boat is bought on finance, and marina and port contracts may require liability cover.

Cover applies within the navigation area set in the policy. If you plan to go outside it, you need to notify us and get approval in advance.

Yes. Cover continues in the boatyard, on the slipway and during maintenance at the shipyard, under the terms stated in the policy.

It's the share of each claim that the policyholder pays themselves. The amount or percentage is set when the policy is arranged and is clearly stated in it.

If the sum insured in the policy is lower than the boat's real value, claim payments are reduced in the same proportion. That's why it's important to insure it at its current value.

Many risks are covered, including malicious acts by the master and crew (known as barratry). The details depend on the clauses in the policy.

Chartering is a change of use that must be declared and approved in advance. If it isn't declared, you could have problems when you make a claim.

Usually the boat's licence or registration certificate, a seaworthiness certificate and up-to-date interior and exterior photos. Additional documents may be requested depending on the type of operation.
