Engineering Insurance

From breaking ground to full production, we protect your construction site, installation work, machinery and electronic equipment against unexpected damage.

Who is it for?

  • Contractors and subcontractors carrying out construction, infrastructure and engineering works
  • Companies that build and install facilities such as factory lines, boilers and turbines
  • Industrial businesses whose production depends on their machinery
  • Solar and hydroelectric plant investors and operators
  • Organisations using sensitive electronic equipment such as servers, medical devices and measuring systems

What is Engineering Insurance and what does it do?

The most expensive hour on any project is the hour work stops. An unexpected collapse during excavation, a control panel that burns out during installation testing, or a machine breakdown that halts the line can wreck both the schedule and the budget in an instant.

Engineering insurance protects the whole journey of a building or facility, from breaking ground to full production. During construction and installation, it covers sudden and unforeseen physical damage, earthquakes, floods, storms, fire and theft; once the site is up and running, it covers machinery breakdown and electronic equipment failure.

From power plants to factory lines, from housing developments to infrastructure works, every project carries its own risks. So we sit down with you to talk through the scope and duration of the work, the surrounding buildings and the equipment being used, and build the policy around the reality of your project.

What's covered

What does the policy cover?

Depending on the package you choose, some or all of the cover below can be added to your policy.

01

Contractors' All Risks (CAR)

Covers sudden and unforeseen physical damage on site during the project, unless specifically excluded in the policy. The construction works themselves, temporary structures and materials on site can all be included.

02

Erection All Risks (EAR)

Protects machinery, plant and steel structure installation work against damage during assembly, trial runs and testing. The post-installation testing period is covered for the duration set out in the general conditions.

03

Natural disaster cover

Damage to the site or facility caused by earthquakes, floods, inundation, storms, landslides and lightning can be added to the policy. Limits and deductibles are set according to the risk profile of the area.

04

Third-party liability

Covers compensation claims for bodily injury and property damage suffered by third parties because of construction or installation work. Damage to neighbouring buildings is also considered under this heading.

05

Maintenance period cover

Damage that appears during the maintenance period after handover, but originates from the construction phase, can be covered. The length of this period is set by your contract.

06

Construction and installation plant

Damage to plant such as cranes, excavators and concrete pumps while on site is covered under a separate heading. A value and area of use are defined for each machine.

07

Site facilities and materials

Prefabricated site offices, storerooms, scaffolding, formwork and stored building materials can be included in the policy. Risks such as theft and fire apply to these items too.

08

Debris removal costs

The cost of clearing the site and removing collapsed sections after a loss is covered up to the limit stated in the policy.

09

Machinery breakdown

Covers breakdowns of machinery in operation caused by operational accidents, design faults, material defects, short circuits, water hammer or lubrication failure. Repair and replacement part costs are covered.

10

Loss of profit from machinery breakdown

When a machine breakdown stops production, the resulting loss of income and ongoing fixed costs can be protected with additional cover. The waiting period and indemnity period are defined in the policy.

11

Electronic equipment

Covers equipment such as servers, medical devices, and measurement and control systems against damage from user error, short circuits, power surges, water and theft. Additional cover is available for data carriers and increased working costs.

12

Power plant insurance

For solar and hydroelectric plants, we put together tailored cover for panels, inverters, transformers, turbines and transmission lines. Loss of income from production stoppages can be included too.

Cover, exclusions and limits vary with the package you choose and the policy's general and special terms. To work out the right set of cover for you, call us on 0850 303 28 66.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions about Engineering Insurance

If your question isn't on the list, give us a call. We'll keep explaining until it all makes sense.

Ideally, the policy should be in force before the first materials arrive on site or excavation begins. A policy can still be arranged after work has started, but any damage that occurred before that date won't be covered.

Contractors' All Risks is mainly for concrete, steel and building works, while Erection All Risks is for installing machinery, plant and equipment. The policy type is chosen according to where the bulk of the work lies; on mixed projects, the two are considered together.

Yes, if the subcontractors are named in the policy as insured parties, their activities can be covered as well. We recommend telling us from the outset who will be working on site.

It covers breakdowns caused by sudden and unforeseen events. Normal wear and tear, corrosion and problems caused by a lack of regular maintenance are not covered.

For installation work, the post-installation testing and trial period is covered for the duration set out in the general conditions. If you need a longer testing period, we state this separately in the policy.

That's what third-party liability cover is for. Damage caused by excavation, crane work or vibration is covered up to the limits stated in the policy.

For power plants, we set up tailored cover for items such as panels, inverters, mounting structures and transformers. If you like, we can also add loss of income from production stoppages.
