Solar Panel Insurance
Protect the panels on your roof, your inverter and your generation income against hail, storms, theft and breakdown.
Who is it for?
- Homeowners who have installed, or plan to install, a solar energy system on their roof
- Individual producers who earn income by feeding electricity into the grid
- People living in areas with frequent hail, storms or heavy snow
- Anyone who doesn't want unexpected costs to stretch the payback period of their investment
- Those looking for protection against external damage that the manufacturer's warranty doesn't cover
What is Solar Panel Insurance and what does it do?
When you put panels on your roof, you're not just adding another appliance to your home; you're making an investment that pays back over years. And that investment sits entirely out in the open. Hail, storms, lightning, snow, theft or an unexpected electronic fault can turn things upside down overnight.
Solar Panel Insurance protects the system as a whole. Cover isn't limited to a panel with cracked glass; it also includes the inverter, cabling, mounting structure and the other parts that keep the system running. When the panels stop working, so does generation, so with loss of profit cover you can also protect the income you lose while you can't produce electricity.
The product is designed for individual systems on the roofs of homes. There are a few simple conditions, such as installed capacity, construction type and the age of the panels; we'll check together whether your system meets them.

What does the policy cover?
Depending on the package you choose, some or all of the cover below can be added to your policy.
Fire, Lightning and Explosion
Damage to the rooftop system from fire, lightning strikes and explosions is covered. For an installation out in the open, lightning is one of the most real risks.
Hail and Storm
Damage from hailstones on the panel surface, and from strong winds on the fixings and mounting parts, is covered.
Weight of Snow
Covers damage if the panels or mounting structure bend, collapse or break under the weight of snow built up on the roof.
Earthquake
Compensation is paid if tremors shift the panels, snap the mounting feet or damage the system along with the roof.
Flood and Water Damage
Damage from heavy rain and floodwater to components such as the cabling, inverter and junction box is covered in line with your policy terms.
Theft and Attempted Theft
Theft of panels, the inverter and cables, and parts broken or removed during an attempted theft, are covered.
Panel and Glass Breakage
If a panel's glass breaks due to a sudden external impact, repair or replacement is covered. The scope depends on the package you choose.
Third-Party Liability
If a panel comes loose and damages a neighbour's roof, a vehicle or a person, your liability to pay compensation is covered.
Damage During Transport and Installation
Damage that may occur while the system is being transported to the site and mounted on the roof can be added to your cover, depending on your policy and package.
Loss of Generation (Additional Cover)
If covered damage stops generation, additional cover can be added for the income lost while the system isn't working.
Cover, exclusions and limits vary with the package you choose and the policy's general and special terms. To work out the right set of cover for you, call us on 0850 303 28 66.
Your questions about Solar Panel Insurance
If your question isn't on the list, give us a call. We'll keep explaining until it all makes sense.
Yes. A manufacturer's warranty usually covers manufacturing defects and loss of efficiency, not hail, storms, theft or lightning. Insurance steps in exactly where the warranty stops.
The product is designed for systems for individual use installed on the roofs of homes of full masonry construction. The total installed capacity must be 25 kW or less, the panel model must be less than 10 years old, and there must be no commercial use.
If covered damage stops generation, it pays the generation income you miss out on until the system is back up and running, in line with your policy terms.
To cover damage to third parties, liability cover needs to be added to the policy. We'll look at your system's location and surroundings together and put the right cover in place.
The installed capacity, the make and model of the panels and inverter, the installation date, the installer's documents and the building's construction type are enough. The installation invoice and photos of the system speed things up.
It's based on the system's current replacement cost, i.e. what it would cost to install the same system today. Declaring too low a figure leads to underpayment on a claim, so we prefer to work it out together.
Yes, damage to the panels and mounting structure from the weight of snow is covered. Regular maintenance before winter reduces both the risk and the extent of any damage.
Safely switch the system off, don't climb onto the roof yourself and, if possible, take photos from a distance. Then let us know; we'll arrange the authorised service and the loss adjuster.
